Summary: Using a mixed method approach, the purpose of this research is to investigate the psychological impact and health consequences of the recent Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in a sample of adults who are currently living in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes in South Louisiana. Our theoretical framework centers around Bronfenbrenner’s (1977, 1979) ecological systems theory. Our first objective in the proposed research is to assess threats to psychological well-being in the study sample, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. Our second objective is to provide new evidence on human adaptive capacities by identifying factors associated with both positive and negative or dysfunctional methods of coping with disaster-related stressors. Our third objective is to provide new evidence concerning ecological influences assumed to promote recovery, focusing on the role of external entities such as volunteer groups and other personnel associated with the relief effort.
